Thomasina Bateman, an antiquarian has been writing a book about the ancient barrows of England. It’s going to record what treasures she comes across inside. A fascinating letter prompts her to explore the tiny village of Bewlay located in rural England. She travels there by train along with her assistant that same day.
At the time of her arrival she discovers that the mysterious person who summoned her is nowhere to be seen. Her assistant never arrives. The landowner is obstinate in refusing access to his barrow and even the residents are wary of the lady who is travelling on her own also (gasp!) wears trousers.
